A Predator UAV was lost over northwest Syria, but exactly how it went down is unclear. Syria’s news agency said the craft was shot down, but a U.S. defense official said it is not possible yet to say just how it crashed., according to a report in Air Force Times.

The UAV was flying over northwest Syria on March 17.

The Air Force is in the process of phasing out the MQ-1 Predator in favor of the newer MQ-9 Reaper, which can carry heavier payloads.
