Jason Matheny, director of the Office for Anticipating Surprise at the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, has been picked to take over as director of IARPA, according to an announcement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued Aug. 3. The appointment is effective immediately.

"Jason brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position and I'm confident that he will continue to maintain the high bar for technical excellence and relevance to our Intelligence Community mission," said DNI James Clapper. "I look forward to him continuing to work closely with partners throughout the national security community to bring to bear our future capabilities."

Matheny joined the ODNI in 2009 as a program manager in IARPA's office of Incisive Analysis. There he developed and successfully moved technologies into the IC from the Aggregative Contingent Estimation (ACE) and Open Source Indicators programs.

IARPA invests in high-risk, high-payoff research programs intended to provide the U.S. with an overwhelming intelligence advantage over our future adversaries.
