The Department of Defense accounts for the majority of federal tablet computer purchases, according to a study by data analytics firm Govini.

Ten federal agencies comprised 88 percent of federal tablet sales. Within those 10 agencies, the Department of Defense made up 59 percent of tablet spending. "Army iPad purchases were the largest at $22 million, accounting for almost a quarter of all Federal tablet spend, followed by Air Force," Govini said. "[Department of Homeland Security] represented 21 percent with [Federal Emergency Management Agency]FEMA leading the way, while the Civilian agency total for [Department of Justice]DOJ, [Department of Veterans Affairs]VA, [Department of Interior]DOI, [Department of Agriculture]USDA, and NASA accounted for less than 18 percent."

"Within DHS, FEMA represents 78 percent of tablet purchases to equip disaster relief officials and has almost exclusively bought Apple," according to the report. "[Customs and Border Protection]CBP, however, has shown a preference for Microsoft for its customs and border agents, illustrating that rugged tablets are in demand to operate in harsh conditions."
