The Army's mine vehicle sensor program has passed an engineering hurdle.

The Vehicle Optics Sensor System (VOSS) has reached Milestone C, which moves the project closer to becoming a program of record.

"Milestone C certifies VOSS as the standard sensor package on mine resistant ambush-protected vehicles, and enables VOSS to become a program of record in fiscal year 2015," said a Lockheed Martin news release.

VOSS provides on-the-move, 360-degree surveillance and explosive hazard detection capability for route clearance and reconnaissance missions. It includes high resolution color, night vision and thermal sensors in a stabilized 15-inch turret. More than 1,100 VOSS systems have been deployed with the Army, Marine Corps and NATO forces in Afghanistan since 2006.
