Battelle has released a new system to detect counterfeit electronic circuits in the supply chain that threaten military and civilian electronics.

The Barricade system "determines authenticity based on electrical signatures and a classification algorithm that generates identity signatures for each class of chips in a given class of authentic devices," said a Battelle news release.

Barricade is made up of electronic component signal acquisition hardware and software installed at customer sites, according to the company. Its simple validation process involves placing a component's integrated circuit into a chip socket in the Barricade hardware. The system will quickly confirm authenticity or warn that the component is counterfeit.

Besides integrated circuits, Barricade also has potential to detect fake military- and commercial-grade components as well as cloned electronics.
