Fort Hood is receiving a sense-and-avoid system to help UAV operators avoid collisions.

"The ground-based, sense-and-avoid radar system will paint a 3-D picture on a computer screen to help unmanned aircraft system operators know what's flying around them," according to the Killeen Daily Herald.

Fort Hood is one of five sites to get the system, according to earlier report.

"A subprogram in the radar, a classifier, can determine if the flying object is just a bird and dismiss non-threats. Initial results show the program accurately sees 90 percent of birds," the newspaper said.

Fort Hood has two Gray Eagle UAV companies attached to the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. The sense-and-avoid system will also be installed at Forts Drum, Campbell and Riley, as well as Hunter Army Airfield.
