Networked forces that can share real-time information are the future of warfare, but those forces will often be operating in areas where communications infrastructure is inaccessible or the RF spectrum is contested by adversaries. That means forces need to take the tactical network with them, and it must be reliable, secure, and robust enough to stand up to interference and electronic attack — providing data information sharing at the speed of relevancy. A number of technologies exist to help meet those goals, including MANET radios and self-forming, self-healing mesh networks that provide data connectivity at the tactical edge. In addition, the Department of Defense’s Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) initiative envisions empowering commanders with the capabilities to connect sensors to shooters across all warfighting domains, and throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. In this webcast, C4ISRNET examined the challenges of establishing and using communications networks in congested and contested environments, including the security, scalability, and EW resiliency needed to achieve spectrum dominance.
