The next-generation GPS satellite control system has passed its first qualification test milestone.

The Global Positioning System Next Generation Operational Control System, or GPS OCX, passed the Configuration Item Qualification Test (CIQT) milestone for the Launch and Checkout System (LCS), according to a Raytheon news release.

"The system provides launch and early orbit checkout capabilities for the modernized GPS III satellites and implements 77 percent of the cybersecurity capabilities for the overall OCX program," Raytheon said. The test was conducted on a government-provided GPS III satellite simulator.

"The completion of this test milestone validates the maturity of the OCX launch and checkout system," Raytheon GPS OCX program director Bill Sullivan said. "As a result of strong collaboration with the Air Force, we were able to demonstrate the system's performance and increase confidence in the program's path ahead."

GPS OCX will next undergo the Factory Qualification Test this summer.
