CANES, which stands for Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services, consolidates and streamlines the fleet's five legacy C4I networks into one cyber-hardened, flexible computing architecture. Integrated voice, video, data and system management functions reduce shipboard workload, while network standardization and variant reduction decreases system vulnerabilities and system administration needs.

Achieving the full deployment decision acquisition milestone means CANES program oversight is transferred from the Department of Defense to the Department of the Navy, which can now move forward to procure and install CANES across all shipboard, submarine and shore-based systems. Since 2013 the Navy has completed installation of CANES on 25 ships with 153 remaining.

The data rights to the CANES design are owned by the government, and continuous competition between qualified vendors throughout the program life cycle realizes hundreds of millions in cost savings while reinforcing operational effectiveness and combat capability, says the Navy.
