Exelis has been awarded a $10.7 million DARPA contract to develop a multifunctional chip for airborne radio applications.

The chip will "pioneer a new architecture known as 'interface awareness,' which aims to improve the standardization of radio subsystems and allow radio components to be re-engineered to meet different requirements without the need to develop entire systems," said an Exelis news release.

Part of DARPA's Communications in Contested Environments program, the chip is aimed at reducing the costs of manufacturing radios as well as improving information sharing and security.
