The new Defense Secretary, Ash Carter, is wasting no time addressing policy. In a letter to defense personnel Feb. 17, he wrote that DoD must grapple with 'wasteful' sequestration cuts and continuing budget uncertainty as it looks to the future, according to a report at Federal Times.

Carter, who was confirmed by the Senate Feb. 12 and sworn in Feb. 17, said he was committed to building the force of the future while dealing with sequestration, which, he wrote, imposes a "wasteful uncertainty and risk to our nation's defense."

The department "must be open to change in order to operate effectively in an increasingly dynamic world; to keep pace with advances in technology; and to attract new generations of talented and dedicated Americans to our calling," he wrote.
