The sniper of the future could carry guided bullets able to change course in mid-flight, according to a report in Marine Corps Times.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is conducting testing on guided bullets and how they might work on the battlefield. DARPA has already conducted successful test firings of guided .50-caliber rounds.

Ryan Innis, a former scout sniper with 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, said the technology would be helpful, but would not eliminate the need for well-trained sniper teams.

"This is an amazing advancement in sniper technology and it will save countless American lives on the battlefield," he told Marine Corps Times. "It will turn any Marine into a precision shooter at extreme distances."

However, he added, "Technology can fail at any given moment and shooters need to adapt to this and respond accordingly."

The video below documents testing of guided bullets by DARPA's Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance (EXACTO) program.
