Commercial space firm Commercial Space Operations Center (ComSpOC) will now be tracking space debris.
ComSpOC has signed an agreement with Thoth Technology, which operates the Algonquin Radio Observatory, and which will perform radar tracking of satellites and debris in geostationary (GEO) orbit.
"This endeavor will upgrade a 46-meter radio astronomy antenna to include radar for surveying debris at geostationary altitude, and expand the space catalog to include objects that until now, have not been tracked," said a news release from Analytical Graphics Inc., which founded ComSpOC.
The radar data will be integrated into ComSpOC's ground-based sensor network. Having a 46-meter dish equipped with radar to survey the Geo-Belt on a daily basis will significantly increase the size and quality of our GEO belt catalog, which in turn will enhance ComSpOC's ability to provide accurate, actionable, and timely collision assessment and warnings," said AGI CEO Paul Graziani.
