The new 4G network that will help Naval Base Coronado

Verizon is teaming up with Naval Base Coronado to install a new 4G network system with hopes of creating 5G technologies on the site in the future.

The small cell wireless facilities have been installed at Naval Air Station North Island, Naval Amphibious Base and San Clemente Island. The 4G network sets the foundation for 5G connectivity and is a step toward Smart Shore initiatives that provide the Navy with security, reliability, and flexibility to support operations.

The new 4G network will assist the Navy in a variety of ways including mobility, protection, range and training areas, and maintenance. These facilities will have better connectivity for operations on the base as well as it’s residents. The new network will be used daily as well as in emergency situations.

Small-cell wireless technology differs from cell towers in that they are typically antennas three to four feet tall that are placed on existing structures, such as utility poles.

“This is a great step in the evolution of mission-critical communications on-base,” said Capt. Timothy Slentz, commanding officer, Naval Air Station North Island, in a press release from Verizon. “Through this partnership, we are building a more responsive, agile and secure network that will help meet our communications needs, even as technology continues to advance.”
