How can we ensure every war fighter and DoD office has the information they need to make the best decisions? In a series of “office hours” style webcasts, C4ISRNET will talk to leaders across the Department of Defense about how they’re eliminating silos in tech because, naturally, stovepipes are so often cited as a problem in the tech community.

The Defense Department plans to use data to expand the common operational picture, or COP, that informs troops about the state of the battlefield, enemy positions, and other high-value assets. From a data perspective, what would it take for allies to integrate their information capabilities with U.S. troops for maximum situational awareness? In this C4ISRNET webcast, we’ll explore the data “building blocks” and policies needed to conduct successful joint operations with allied forces across all domains.

JADC2 aims to bring all of the armed forces under a single operational umbrella, allowing soldiers on the ground, pilots in the air and sailors at sea to share real-time information and work seamlessly to achieve mission goals. In this Removing Stovepipes, Defense News and C4ISRNET will look at where the JADC2 initiative is now, the challenges it faces in 2022 and what major milestones remain on the journey to implementation.

Data management is required to keep information flowing throughout the armed forces, allowing everyone from commanders in the Pentagon to shooters in the field to make accurate, real-time decisions. C4ISRNET explored service-led initiatives to improve data management in the cloud, such as the Army’s Enterprise Cloud Management Agency, the Navy’s new cloud computing policy, and the Air Force’s migration to a cloud environment last year.

An open source architecture for the command and control systems allows the military to roll out new software, capabilities and updates faster and cheaper, with the ultimate goal of ending stovepiped setups to process data for separate satellites. C4ISRNET checked on progress with a leading prototype project to test this agile approach for missile warning satellites, as the Space Force works toward a common C2 ground service for all of its space systems.

The Defense Department’s quest to fulfill JADC2 — a strategy for connecting every sensor to every shooter across the services — has elevated the need for fast, secure and efficient data sharing between US forces and their allies. C4ISRNET spoke to senior data officers about how their organization is pursuing its data goals and eliminating information silos to optimize data-sharing for JADC2.

C4ISRNET spoke to leadership at USAF’s enterprise IT department to understand their top digital transformation priorities and methods for eliminating information silos. The discussion is expected to touch on a range of topics, including cloud migration, digital engineering, and the rise of enterprise IT as a service.

SOCOM is a military leader in trying to adopt artificial intelligence and machine learning for all aspects of warfare. With that commitment, operators have become the military’s top AI testers. We’ll catch up with Chief Data Officer Thomas Kenney to talk about what challenges remain and what insights operators are learning that could help the military scale successes. Some SOCOM AI projects include streamlining logistics, harnessing big data for better-informed battlefield decisions, and even predicting when a tank or a jet needs maintenance to avoid failure at a critical moment.

At Project Convergence 2020, the Army conducted the most high-profile test of its beyond-line-of-sight targeting capability, taking data from on orbit sensors, transforming that into targeting data, and feeding it to the best fires system. During this episode of C4ISRNET’s “Removing Stovepipes” webcast series, we asked how the capability has improved ahead of this year’s event and look at the role of new position, navigation and timing technologies for this project.

February 17, 2021
During this episode of C4ISRNET’s “Removing Stovepipes” webcast series, we will talk with Navy Chief Data Officer Thomas Sasala who is building a plan from scratch to store and make use of the vast array of data the service collects. He brought lessons learned from managing data previously for the Army, weaving goals into the Navy’s plan for newer technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning. We will ask about readying the data to use at sea and changes that the digital transformation will bring.

December 10, 2020
During this episode, we discussed the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center and the organization’s work and upcoming projects. This conversation looked at the operational uses for AI today, what obstacles still remain and how the JAIC is working with offices throughout DOD to add new AI capabilities.

Brig. Gen. Darrin Leleux, the Deputy Director for the Secretary of Defense’s Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations Cross Functional Team will discuss the new Electromagnetic Spectrum Superiority Strategy, what it means, what the Department’s vision for electronic warfare looks like and how to measure success.

October 19, 2020
During this webcast, we will speaker with Donald Coulter, Senior sScience and Technology Advisor, with the Army’s Network Cross Functional Team about the Army’s Network Modernization efforts.

October 15, 2020
Project Convergence is an exercise that will test the sharing of targeting data among the Army’s newest weapons, including aerial scouts, long-range missile launchers and armored vehicles. In this session, we explored what happened, what kind of hardware and software is necessary and what kind of modernization must take place to be successful.

September 22, 2020
During this webcast, will explore the prospects and problems with software development the department of defense faces today, how software factories could get newer iterations of technology to the warfighter faster, and how these factories will evolve in the near term.

September 15, 2020
During this webcast, we will discuss the service’s plans for digital architecture, data standards and the role of software in connecting the Air Force’s weapons through the Advanced Battle Management System and the JADC2 concept. What technical challenges do officials still need to overcome and what kind of momentum is in place to change how the Air Force thinks about these problems?
