Hughes has been awarded a Department of Defense contract to improve satellite communications.

Under the Wideband Communications Architecture Study contract, for which the value was not specified, Hughes “will investigate a wide-ranging commercial perspective on how different satellite transports can interoperate for wideband government applications,” according to a company news release.

Hughes will conduct a design analysis of wide-beam, spot-beam and on-board processing satellites, including geosynchronous and low-Earth orbit spacecraft as well as airborne platforms.

“Hughes is proposing to leverage a Multi-Modem Adaptor to enable multiple service providers to contribute towards a resilient SATCOM service that will also automate provisioning and improve network operational efficiency,” the company said.
