DISA aids Air Force in cloud migration

Feb. 12, 2014

Air Force Headquarters is the latest defense component to migrate thousands of email users to the cloud.

About 7,800 unclassified email accounts and an additional 1,300 mobile devices are now operating on DoD Enterprise Email, the Defense Information Systems Agency announced Thursday. The DISA-provided service includes access to contact information for every DoD Common Access Card holder, calendar sharing capabilities and secure access to Web-based email.

The Air Force plans to transition about 150,000 classified email accounts to DEE over the coming months.

The move follows a Sept. 5 memo from DoD Chief Information Officer Teri Takai directing all department components to migrate to the Defense Enterprise Email system. Takai gave defense organizations until January to develop a plan for making the switch.

She directed all components and commands to identify existing email capabilities and move them to the DoD-wide system no later than the first quarter of fiscal 2015.

“DoD Enterprise Email is a core service of the Joint Information Environment," Lt. Gen. Michael Basla, Air Force chief of information dominance and chief information officer, said in a news release. "As the Air Force adopts a Defense Information Systems Agency–managed enterprise capability, we better align with joint warfighter needs and can apply greater focus on our core mission areas, rather than operating and maintaining an email infrastructure."

DISA supports more than 1.6 million email users, including the Army, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Joint Staff, U.S. Southern Command, U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, and more than 20 other DoD entities, DISA said. The system was developed to support up to 4.5 million users.
