Lockheed wins space tracking contract

Jan. 10, 2014

Lockheed Martin has won a $3.9 million space situational awareness contract from the U.S. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center.

The contract calls for Lockheed Martin to continue development of the Non-Traditional Data Pre-Processor under the Integrated Space Command and Control contract. ISC2 tracks and catalogs more than 23,000 space objects, as well as providing air and missile attack warning information to the President of the United States, Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Prime Minister of Canada.

NDPP will boost ISC2's space situational awareness capabilities by extending communications infrastructure between sensor and satellite operators around the world, and the Joint Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base, which maintains the space catalog. NDPP will allow sensors and satellite operators to cross multiple security levels as they feed data to JSpOC, which in turn can provide more timely space catalog updates.

“The cars we drive on Earth have mirrors and sensors to prevent bumps and scrapes, but if you’re trying to avoid rapidly moving debris in space, you’ll need enhanced situational awareness,” said Rob Smith, vice president of C4ISR systems for Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Solutions. “Space has no national borders so it’s important to share collected data to protect all the space assets currently orbiting the planet.”
